It is the year of aversions and boycotts. So when the trailer for Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan starred Pawn No.1 fell on YouTube on Saturday, outraged janta and Bollywood “fans” had only one mission on their hands: to make the “nepo kids” video the most disgusting video of 2020. But then, the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video had other plans in mind.
Directed by veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, the comedy film is a remake of the iconic film starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor that was released in 1995. The trailer shows Varun in multiple avatars, from trying to recreate Govinda’s charm to imitate Mithun Chakraborty. Some of the original songs have also been included in the remake.
The trailer, for all the obvious reasons, sparked an instant comparison between Govinda and Varun, with many ridiculing the latter with memes for his seemingly over-the-top acting and thus “ruining” the gem.

There was another section of outraged fans, who expressed their disgust after seeing the trailer and the shouts to boycott the “star children” grew louder on Saturday. In fact, netizens prepared to “dislike” the video on YouTube even before the trailer was posted on the platform.
Perhaps aware of the fate that awaited them, Amazon Prime Video had already disabled the “Like-Dislike” button on its YouTube channel during the trailer launch. The forecast may have also helped the streaming platform make a perfect “reverse card UNO” move, as outraged and unsuspecting netizens kept turning back to video, causing the trend of the advance to number 2 across the globe. India in no time.
Earlier this year, Mahesh Bhatt’s trailer directed Sadak 2 became the second least liked video on YouTuber after angry fans lashed out at the director and the industry at large for “promoting” nepotism and favoritism. The film, which received the lowest IMDb ratings for a Bollywood film, starred his daughters Alia and Pooja Bhatt in leading roles.
Meanwhile, the official synopsis for David Dhawan’s 45th film reads: After being insulted by a wealthy businessman named Rozario, Pandit Jai Kishen teaches him a lesson by marrying his daughter to Raju, a Coolie posing as millionaire. Raju’s true identity is soon exposed, but the story of having a rich and disgusting twin is made up. One lie leads to another and things start to spiral out of control.
Coolie No. 1 will premiere exclusively on December 25, 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
