Oppo X 2021 unveiled as the world’s first smartphone concept with an extendable screen

Smartphone makers are constantly pushing the boundaries with technological innovation. Every year we see a new feature or standard become the norm or a new release evolving on top of fundamental designs. Now, Oppo has unveiled the Oppo X 2021 Rollable Concept smartphone that features an extendable screen, which is the first of its kind.

The Chinese tech giant’s R&D efforts are on full display at the Inno Day 2020 event when the Oppo X 2021 arrives with a unique extendable display. Its screen expands from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches, which is achieved through the company’s roll-up concept technology. This makes the screen durable without “hard fold “ involved to eliminate the “headache” of a crease that forms in the middle of the screen, which is common in folding phones. The screen is an OLED panel that is extended through its 6.8mm roll motor which is a proprietary design. In particular, the company had applied for 122 patents for this project, of which 12 are used only in the displacement mechanism.

Oppo put an emphasis on durability and the support structure behind its roll-up display. The company built a special 2-in-1 plate, which acts as a support when the screen is contracted or extended. This is accomplished by making the support panel in two parts with one part that slides out along with the screen to maintain a rigid structure and achieve a flat surface. Oppo’s chief 5G scientist Henry Tang stated that “Compared to folding technologies, roll-up screens are much more adaptable, since they can be adjusted between the minimum and maximum sizes for different usage scenarios ”.

Additionally, the company also added a custom-made laminate for the screen for added protection. Warp Track is a 0.1mm laminate that firmly protects the screen. Oppo wants this device to improve the usual functions that a smartphone offers. In other words, the additional space would offer a wider view during gameplay, additional space for reading e-books, and even offer a split interface to make full use of the extended screen.

Unfortunately, the finer details and specs of the smartphone are currently unknown, and the company has not revealed any further details about the panel vendor or mentioned anything specific regarding availability. Levin Liu, Oppo Vice President and Director of the Oppo Research Institute, also emphasized the concept stage of the device, but hopes to bring this technology to consumers “at the right time.”
