Responding to questions from social media users during his weekly Sunday Samvaad show, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Sunday that only 10 states are reporting the maximum number of active Covid-19 cases in the country. The minister was responding to a question asking if India is in the community spread phase of Covid 19.
“A large outbreak of Covid-19 in certain districts indicates an acute spread of the new coronavirus. In light of specific state efforts, only 10 states are contributing 77% of active cases. If you look at data specific to the state, you will find that these cases are concentrated in a few districts, ”said the minister.
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Telangana, Assam, Chattisgarh, Kerala, Delhi are these 10 states.
Community transmission is the phase in which the source of a new infection cannot be identified.
The health ministers’ comment comes a day after Delhi’s health minister Satyendar Jain investigated the Center and said the Center should have accepted community transmission. “Community transmission is a technical term, but with so many cases reported from Delhi and other parts of the country, community transmission should have been accepted. But only the center and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) scientists can say, yet the infection is spreading in the community, ”Jain said on Saturday.
In various predictions of the peak of Covid-19 in the country, the health minister said that these predictions often fail. “An epidemic curve has ascending, maximum and descending phases. India is on multiple trajectories through urban, semi-urban and rural populations. The mathematical models that predict a peak are based on various assumptions, which may not always be accurate, ”said the minister.
