India has allowed the export of onions in ports in transit to all countries, including Bangladesh, government sources said on Friday.
In the Calcutta area, there are 20,089 metric tons of onion in the port, while in the Mumbai-II area, 4,576 metric tons of the product remain, the sources said.
In other places like Trichy and Nagpur, 933 and about 258 metric tons of onions are found in these ports, respectively, they added.
The event comes after Bangladesh expressed “deep concern” over India’s decision to ban onion exports, according to media reports.
The central government on Monday banned the export of all varieties of onions, except those cut, sliced or powdered, with immediate effect, in an apparent measure aimed at increasing domestic supply and lowering prices.
Last October, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jokingly said that she asked her cook not to add onion while preparing food and regretted that her country was affected by India’s decision to ban onion exports. in September. The ban was subsequently lifted in March of this year.
“We have been bothered by the ban on onion exports. If you had given us a notice, we could have obtained it from elsewhere. I have instructed my cook not to put onions while preparing the food. If you want to do such Then let us know ASAP, Hasina had said at an event in the national capital while on an official visit to India.
India’s decision to ban onion exports earlier this week has skyrocketed prices for the kitchen staple in Bangladesh. Apart from this, hundreds of onion trucks bound for Bangladesh were stranded at various ports and land borders in West Bengal. (
