Open beta versions of OxygenOS are usually very stable, but since they are beta quality, there are sometimes critical bugs. OnePlus started rolling out Open Beta 12 on OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro a few days ago, but stopped the launch after some people were unable to unlock their phones.

The OxygenOS Open Beta 12 for OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro included some new features, such as camera lens dirt alerts, mobile data change in phone calls, and April security patches. You can view the full changelog below, courtesy of XDA Developers.

  • System
    • Optimized volume adjustment to improve user experience.
    • Added missing recording icon on call screen
    • Android security patch updated to 2020.04
    • Known issues have been fixed and system stability has been improved.
  • Phone
    • Added ringtone duration information for missed calls
    • Now you can change your mobile data into VoLTE compatible phone calls
  • Camera
    • Added a feature that can now detect dirt on the camera lens, causing quick cleaning for better image and video quality.

However, shortly after launching the beta version, OnePlus withdrew the launch. While some device owners found no issue with the launch, others were no longer able to unlock their phone. There are also reports of higher temperatures during charging, Wi-Fi disconnections, and other issues.

As terrible as it is to lose all local data on your phone, installing beta-quality software means there can be massive problems from time to time. If you’re on Open Beta 12, there’s also no official way to downgrade to Beta 11 – you must perform a factory reset.

Manu J., Global Product Operations Manager for OnePlus, has released a statement about Open Beta 12 on company forums. He said OnePlus has been closely investigating unlock issues, but instead of rushing another beta, the company is taking its time to prevent more bugs from emerging.

Here is the full message:

Open Beta 12 for OnePlus 7 / 7Pro was partially released on April 18. Unfortunately, we had to stop the launch after receiving reports from some users who are facing unlock issues. We immediately had direct one-on-one contact with affected users and have been closely following it ever since.

We attach great importance to issues reported by our users in the open beta stage. Therefore, we have assigned a special troubleshooting team to verify and investigate further. We have made a little progress; however, our analysis is based primarily on the limited cases we have received. The problem is quite complex as many mechanisms could trigger the unlock error, and it will take us a while to find the exact solution.

Rather than rushing to launch a faulty OBT version, we believe that postponing the launch will ensure an OxygenOS experience in line with your expectations. OBT builds can sometimes be unstable; Our beta testers review the builds, knowing that they could lead to errors. We are grateful for their unremitting contribution to ensuring quality stable construction for the rest of the community, while helping to shape numerous features.

We sincerely apologize to the users affected by this version. Stay tuned for OnePlus announcements in the Community for the latest information on the next open beta release. We appreciate your patience in this matter.
