Not long ago, OnePlus made headlines for launching its new OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro devices. The company is making waves once again, but this time for a very different reason. According to a report by EngadgetThe phone maker has followed through with substantial layoffs at various offices in Europe.

According to sources close to the matter, many regional offices, namely the United Kingdom, France and Germany, have been reduced by 80 percent, leaving skeletal teams of around three people in some countries. Last summer, teams in Spain and Italy went through the same phase, before being fired entirely. This was followed by a large turnover of UK staff shortly thereafter.
OnePlus confirmed the layoffs in a statement, noting that all of these are part of the company’s “normal restructuring” and its efforts in Europe. A company spokesperson also noted:
Europe is a very important market for us and it has been since the beginning of OnePlus. We are doing a strategic restructuring in Europe and, in fact, we are even hiring in the region.
Notably, OnePlus is not blaming the current state of the global economy as a result of this, suggesting that the “restructuring” had actually been planned well in advance.

As for the company’s other European operations, Engadget reports that OnePlus offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Finland have not been affected at all. In addition, some employees are said to have been asked to move to Helsinki. While OnePlus does not confirm this, it is suspected that this is where the company’s new European headquarters will be located (the current one is in London).
So is this the sign of future problems for OnePlus end result? It is difficult to know now. Smartphone sales across the board are slowing down, and with the latest OnePlus devices reaching higher prices than ever, it will be interesting to see what comes next.
