OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro update brings screen and camera fixes

As OnePlus promised just a few days ago, more updates are now rolling out for its latest pair of phones. Unlike the latest pre-launch updates, which had nearly identical changelogs, this one offers a handful of much-appreciated fixes, including some unnamed “display effect” optimizations and camera enhancements. For the 8 Pro, it also offers better touch rejection along the edges of the touch screen. But most importantly, in our tests, the 8 Pro update offers at least a partial solution to so-called “green tint” complaints.

The build numbers for this latest update vary: it’s 10.5.5 for OnePlus 8 Pro, but it’s still 10.5.4 for OnePlus 8. OnePlus hasn’t announced the update on its forums as it usually does, but we’ve already seen it. deploying to our own devices:

Among the euphemistic changes are “optimized display effects”, and while that is offensively vague, I can confirm in my own tests that grays at very low brightness levels no longer seem to dramatically dye green, although they still don’t match. with the performance of the 7 Pro or 7T for me. I would say it is a partial Settlement for “green tint” complaints. This change also helps reduce the visibility of any panel irregularities with items like night / dark theme backgrounds at night.

Crushed / cropped blacks too seem be a minor problem at different brightness levels, but still not fixed. However, I don’t think OnePlus planned to address that issue until a later update, so any fix here is likely to spill over from other changes.

The OnePlus 8’s changelog also claims to have the same changes in the display effect, but I didn’t notice any “green tint” issues with mine.

Outside of the specific screen fixes, the update also adds some improvements for edge touch sensitivity, which was an issue on the 8 Pro due to its curved edges, sheer size, and apparent lack of edge touch rejection earlier. I can report that the phone now rejects accidental edge touch input much better (although I’m not sure it did) absolutely before). The keyboard doesn’t randomly close as often due to accidental bumps on the edge, and a poor grip that spills onto the screen doesn’t interfere as much with things.

The “motion graphics smoothing” similar to the soap opera effect on the 8 Pro is now supposedly even smoother, although I personally can’t stand the motion tween and I’m happy to report that it’s still disabled by default.

Camera fixes for low-light white balance and focus on both phones are also present, along with other improvements in “smoothness and stability.” Other fixes and enhancements for mobile data, Wi-Fi, and overall system stability are also included.

The updates are rolling out as we speak for the handful of people who already have the phone, so it should be a one-day download for those who shop once general sales open on April 29.
