Guwahati:
Two incidents of mob attacks in a 48-hour period have rocked Assam, in northeast India. While Sabin Gour was killed after a family feud turned violent in Biswanath in central Assam, Majen Nath is recovering from a brutal beating by locals in Bongaigaon, western Assam, who thought he was caught trying to rob a house.
According to eyewitnesses, Sabin, a salaried laborer at the Pratapgarh tea plantation, about 9 km from Biswanath Chariali, the district headquarters, was tied to a tree and beaten by friends of his brother Nabin Gour after allegedly attacked him.
“Sabin and Nabin, both day laborers, got into a fight on Thursday during which Sabin hit Nabin with a sharp object. Nabin was immediately taken to the nearby hospital where he is receiving treatment. On Friday, Nabin’s friends, upon receiving the information, arrived looking for Sabin, he tied him to a nearby tree and beat him, ”police said.
By the time the Biswanath police took Sabin to the hospital, he had already died.
“We have captured Lepa Nayak, Bhaya Nayak, Lala Nayak and Mahesh Gor in this regard,” police said.
However, the police managed to rescue Majen Nath in time on Saturday when locals were still beating him in Devangaon, about 18 km from the district headquarters, the town of Bongaigaon.
“Majen, a habitual addict, quietly sneaked into Kamleshwar Nath’s house in the early hours of Saturday and slept there. A woman found him lying on the ground and, not recognizing him, locked him inside and called the locals. They came and started beating him, “police said.
“Nath was taken to the nearest Boitamari police station, where it was discovered that he was not a thief but an addict who found the doors ajar and fell asleep in a fit of euphoria,” police said.
These are not the first mob attacks in Assam this year. Earlier, locals beat a vegetable seller to death in Rural Kamrup and tea garden workers in the Jorhat district of upper Assam killed a young man after he allegedly sexually abused a woman.
