Various celebrities are taking to social media to wish their fans on the occasion of Onam. Onam, marking the beginning of the harvest season for the Keralites, is a ten-day festival that ends with Thiruvonam, which, according to tales, is the day the demon king Mahabali visits Earth. Despite being a demon, Mahabali was known to be a good king, so people celebrate his return. Malayalis celebrate the festival with a nine-course feast called Onasadhya and festivities such as Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (Rangoli flower), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (banana offerings), Onapottan (costumes) and Atthachamayam (folk songs and dances).
In the Hindi film fraternity, Malaika Arora Khan, whose mother Joyce Polycarp is a Malayali Catholic, was one of the first celebrities to share her Onam celebration images with fans. Malaika celebrated the festival with her parents, her sister Amrita Arora and her family.
