‘On my watch!’: Trump boasts of the efficacy of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, boasted of the impressive initial results of the trial of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Modern Inc., which has shown an efficacy of 94.5%. Calling the development of the Covid-19 vaccine as “great discoveries”, the US president said that “great historians” should remember that it happened during his tenure.

“Another vaccine has just been announced. This time for Moderna, 95% effective. For those great ‘historians’, remember that these great discoveries, which will end the plague of China, were made under my supervision! “Trump tweeted.

Earlier today, the American biotech company said the trial met statistical criteria, adding that preliminary analysis suggests broadly consistent safety across all subgroups tested. Moderna confirmed that it intends to file an Emergency Use Authorization (US) with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the coming weeks.

After the announcement, President-elect Joe Biden said the news about the second vaccine is all the more reason to be hopeful, but warned that it is still months away before it becomes available. Biden took to Twitter to warn that Americans should continue to wear masks and practice social distancing to control the virus.

“Once again, I congratulate the brilliant men and women who produced this breakthrough and have brought us one step closer to defeating this virus. I am also grateful for the frontline workers who are still dealing with the virus throughout the day, ”he tweeted.

The United States remains the most affected country in terms of overall coronavirus cases and related deaths. According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the US has reported more than 11 million cases of Covid-19 and more than 246,000 related deaths so far. Last week, Biden’s transition team announced the formation of the Covid-19 Transition Advisory Board, comprised of prominent public health experts to advise management.
