Former Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Vice President of the National Conference (NC), Omar Abdullah, announced on Wednesday morning that he will leave the government house on Gupkar Road, occupied by him since he was elected as a deputy from Srinagar in 2002. .
In a tweet, Omar said that he is going to vacate the house because the rights rules have changed in the J&K Union Territory (UT). Last August, the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was forked into two UTs: Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh and the parliament revoked the special status that the region enjoyed.
Omar said he has started looking for a house and will voluntarily abandon it at the end of October.
“My letter to J&K management. I will be leaving my government accommodation in Srinagar before the end of October. The point to be made is that, contrary to the stories planted in the media last year, I did not receive any eviction notice and I have decided to do it of my own free will, ” Omar Abdullah tweeted in the letter addressed to the administrative secretary of the department. of estates of the government of J&K.
“I was assigned a G-1 house in 2002 in my capacity as a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Srinagar constituency. After my election as Prime Minister in 2008, the adjoining house was renovated and the G1 and G-5 complex was used as CM’s official residence from October 2010 onwards. I continued to occupy this accommodation after I left CM’s office in January 2015, as the rules allowed me to retain accommodation in Srinagar, ” he said in the letter.

“As a result of the change in rights for former J&K CMs a few months ago, I now find myself in unauthorized occupation of this accommodation as no attempt has been made to regularize my allowance for security or any other reason. This is a situation that is unacceptable to me. I have never held onto any government property that I was not entitled to and I do not intend to start now. ”

The former prime minister of J&K further claims that he is looking for suitable accommodation. “The process is taking longer due to the limitations caused by Covid -19. I intend to complete the process in 8-10 weeks and should be in a position to deliver the Gupkar road accommodation accordingly. ”
Omar’s official residence was close to the houses of his father Farooq Abdullah and his aunt and sister. It is unclear whether the former CM will move to his father’s house or to any other location within the city. Gupkar is considered the safest area in the city and has 24-hour security protection and surveillance.
