WhatsApp is testing a new feature, which will allow a user to report unwanted contacts in the app, but will now be asked to share recent chat messages with these accounts as a test. The feature is available in Android version 2.20.206.3 of the app, and beta testers should see the feature live.

A user will be able to report both normal and commercial WhatsApp accounts if they receive spam or harassment on the messaging platform. The only difference is that WhatsApp now wants some evidence before acting against any account. So if you choose to report an account, a message will say “The most recent messages from this user will be forwarded to WhatsApp.”

According to a new report from Wabetainfo, the Facebook-owned company will only take action against any account after properly verifying it. The feature is currently available to Android beta testers. The report explains that the courier service “prepares its report considering several factors.” First, the company checks how many users have reported the person in question. If the company finds multiple reports against a new WhatsApp number, it will be blacklisted.

Currently, if you receive a message from an unknown contact or company, WhatsApp only asks you to report, block or add the person to contacts. In the new update, WhatsApp will now ask you to send a copy of recent chat messages to double check if a report is correct or not. This will help the company to better analyze the situation and act accordingly.

When sharing a chat, this message will also appear: “WhatsApp never receives your messages without your permissions. If you decide to report a contact, you agree to forward a copy of recent messages from that chat to WhatsApp. “

For groups, you have the option to exit and delete all messages. If you are reporting a particular person, you will be given the option to block the person and remove the chat. The feature will also be rolling out for iOS beta testers soon, though the official rollout for regular users is likely to take some time.
