Noted economist Dr. Isher Judge Ahluwalia, who received the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, died today. Dr. Isher Ahluwalia was married to Montek Singh Ahluwalia, the former vice chairman of the Planning Commission. He received the Padma Bhushan Award in 2009 for his services in the field of education and literature. He was 74 years old.
She was chair of the Delhi-based think tank, the Indian Council of Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
When news of his death broke, many on social media paid rich tributes.

Biotech industry veteran Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw shared a photo of the two together as she recalled Dr. Ahluwalia’s “valiant battle with cancer.”

“He was a member of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) in India-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), an association established by the respective governments in 2011-12,” according to ICRIER’s official website. “He was also a member of the EPG of the Asian Development Bank from 2006 to 2007,” says his biography on the website.
