Nobel Prize 2020: 3 Scientists Share the Nobel Prize in Physics for Black Hole Research | World News

NEW DELHI: 2020 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to Roger Penrose for the discovery of a black hole and to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez for discovering “a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy.”
The three winners share this year Nobel Prize in Physics for their discoveries about one of the most exotic phenomena in the universe, the black hole, the Nobel committee said.

Roger Penrose invented ingenious mathematical methods to explore Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. He showed that the theory leads to the formation of black holes, those monsters in time and space that capture everything that enters them.
Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez discovered that an invisible and extremely heavy object governs the orbits of the stars in the center of our galaxy. A supermassive black hole is the only currently known explanation.

Last year’s award went to Canadian cosmologist James Peebles for his theoretical work on the first moments after the Big Bang, and Swiss astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for discovering a planet outside our solar system.
The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and a cash prize of SEK 10 million (over $ 1.1 million), courtesy of a legacy left 124 years ago by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. . The amount was recently increased to adjust for inflation.
On Monday, the Nobel Committee awarded the physiology and medicine prize to Americans Harvey J Alter and Charles M Rice and British-born scientist Michael Houghton for discovering the hepatitis C virus that devastates the liver.
