NEW DELHI: In a survey conducted on school restrooms built by central public sector companies (CPSE) in government schools, he Controller and Auditor General found that in 75% of cases the toilets were not hygienically maintained, 72% did not have running water, and 30% were not in use due to damage and other reasons.
The auditor collected 2,695 toilets for a sample study, according to a CAG report featured in Parliament on Wednesday. The government directed these CPSEs to maintain the toilets built by them for three to five years and to account for the annual expenses in the CSR budget.
Since many public schools did not have separate toilets for boys and girls, the government had asked CPSEs in 2014 to build more than 1.40 lakh of toilets in one year. Approximately 53 CPSEs participated in this project and built 1,30,703 toilets at a cost of Rs 2,162 crore.
“During the survey, the audit noted that proper maintenance / sanitation was not available in 1,812 of the 2,326 toilets,” said CAG.
