No votes for torn BJP posters in iconic Kolkata coffee shop

West Bengal Assembly Election: Right-wing youth wore T-shirts that read ‘Modi Para’

Calcutta:

The bitter BJP-Trinamool Congress battle for West Bengal has now reached the iconic Coffee House in Kolkata.

At around 4:30 pm Monday, BJP supporters in saffron T-shirts stormed the first floor of the Coffee House on College Street and smashed posters on the staircase walls that read “No votes for the BJP.”

A group of activists is running this “No Votes to BJP” campaign. They had held a big march in Calcutta on March 10 against the BJP and have been campaigning in the villages against the opposition party.

Activists present inside the Coffee House at the time of the incident said the right-wing youth were wearing T-shirts that read ‘Modi Paraca ‘ and were allegedly led by the controversial BJP spokesperson, Tejinder Singh Bagga.

Later, Bagga tweeted images and videos of the incident.

While some posters were torn down, in some, the word “No” was blackened. Angry slogans were exchanged, pitting Khudiram against Nathuram.

“Do not Vote to BJP (campaign) strongly condemns such vandalism on behalf of the campaign and the boos from activists,” the group said in a media statement.

They will return to College Street on Tuesday to put up new ‘Don’t Vote BJP’ signs and protest right-wing action at Coffee House.

“The right-wing forces must be aware that the people of Bengal do not love them and their disruptive behavior in the state,” one of the activists, Priyasmita, told NDTV.

‘Modipara’ is an app for Narendra Modi fans, which was launched by Amit Shah during one of his recent visits to Bengal. Their goal: to attract voters in each ‘paraca’ or neighborhood. It has brought together young people who are on the streets of Calcutta campaigning for the BJP.
