The AAP government told the Delhi High Court on Thursday that it has decided not to impose a night curfew on Delhi from now on, after assessing the current Covid-19 situation in the capital.
On November 26, a higher court consisting of Judge Hima Kohli and Judge Subramonium Prasad asked the government to present its response on the imposition of the night curfew without delay. At the time, the government told the court that no decision was made on the night curfew, but that it was under “active consideration.”
On Thursday, the Delhi government released a status report in which it said it had issued an order ordering the status quo to be maintained regarding permitted and restricted activities in the city until December 31. “Therefore, no new activity has been allowed / allowed until December 31,” the report says. Previously, the court had criticized the government for lifting various restrictions at a time when the number of cases was on the rise.
Since the last week of October, the capital has seen a spike in daily infections and the number surpassed the 8,000 mark in November. The daily figure also topped 100 in November, when the capital is believed to have witnessed the third wave of Covid-19. The National Center for Disease Control in a recent report had warned that Delhi needs to be prepared for some 15,000 new cases of disease. Covid-19 per day, taking into account the respiratory problems related to the upcoming winter season, the large influx of patients from abroad, and festive gatherings. Although several states have announced night curfews and local restrictions, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal maintained that the restrictions are not a solution to the Covid-19 situation: they only delay the spread.
However, in recent days, the number of daily infections in Delhi fell below 4,000 as it recorded 3,944 new Covid-19 infections on Wednesday.
