NEW DELHI: Thirteen states and Union Territories, including Kerala, Odisha and Jammu and Kashmir, have not reported any new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, Union health minister Harard Vardhan he said Thursday.

Vardhan reviewed the preparedness and containment measures for handling Covid-19 in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal, saying that 180 districts across the country have not reported any new cases of respiratory infection in less than seven days.
Another 180 districts had no new cases in the past seven to 13 days. Up to 164 districts have not registered any new cases in 14-20 days, while 136 districts have not reported any cases of coronavirus infection in the last 21 to 28 days, said in a statement from the health ministry.
The 13 states and Union territories that have not reported any new cases in the last 24 hours are Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Mizoram, Manipur, Goa, Meghalaya, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Daman and Diu, Sikkim, Nagaland and the Lakshadweep islands have not reported a single case to date, he said.
“The testing capacity of Covid-19 has increased. Up to 95,000 tests are carried out daily in 327 government and 118 private laboratories. In total, 13,57,442 tests have been carried out so far,” the minister said.
In developing the country’s readiness in terms of health infrastructure, Vardhan said that as of now there are 821 dedicated Covid-19 hospitals with 1.50,059 beds (1.32,219 isolation beds and 17,840 ICU beds) and 1,898 health centers dedicated with 1.19,109 beds (1.09,286 isolation and 9,823 ICU beds) along with 7,569 quarantine centers.
The Union Health Minister also said that 29.06 lakh of personal protective equipment (PPE) and 62.77 lakh of N-95 masks have been distributed to states, Union territories and central institutions.
After a brief presentation on the status of Covid-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal, Vardhan said states should focus on effective surveillance, contact tracing and early diagnosis of low mortality rate. from Covid-19.
“Surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI) should be intensified in unaffected districts and in areas that have not reported cases for the past 14 days and more through the network of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) in collaboration with medical school hospitals.
“Such measures will help indicate the presence of any possible hidden infection at an early stage and, in turn, timely containment,” he said.
Vardhan called on states to ensure that infection prevention and control practices are adopted at all health centers to reduce and prevent the chances of infection among health workers. He advised them to implement all the central guidelines and warnings at the field level.
States have been informed of the measures taken to partner with private hospitals for the management of Covid-19. Uttar Pradesh has stated that it has identified private hospitals as dedicated health centers for Covid-19 through payment.
In view of the increase in the number of stranded migrant workers who would arrive in their native states in the coming days, Vardhan emphasized developing a robust strategy and mechanism for testing, quarantining, and treating positive cases.
“Some states must also return people from abroad. An effective strategy is needed for their testing, institutional quarantine and treatment if necessary,” he said.
States were reiterated to ensure the provision of essential non-coronavirus health services, such as immunization campaigns, tuberculosis search and treatment, blood transfusion for patients requiring dialysis, treatment of cancer patients, and care prenatal pregnant women, among others, the health ministry statement said.
“It was also claimed that the Ayushman Bharat – Health and Wellness Centers could be used to detect hypertension, diabetes and three types of cancer. Telemedicine and psychological counseling could be used for a larger population in view of the closure. It is recommended to keep a stock adequate essential drugs.
“They were also informed that helpline number 104 in addition to 1075 can be used to repair claims for essential non-Covid services, and to report the availability of these services, etc.,” he said.
The number of Covid-19 deaths rose to 1,783 and the number of cases rose to 52,952 on Thursday, registering an increase of 89 deaths and 3,561 cases in 24 hours from Wednesday morning, according to the Union Ministry of Health.
