As cases of Covid-19 in Mumbai continue to rise, Section 144 of CrPC was imposed in the city as of midnight on September 17 to contain the spread of the virus.
However, the order is just an extension of the previous order issued by officials on August 31 and no new restrictions have been imposed.
With this, the restriction to the gathering of a large group has been extended in Mumbai until September 30.
Shortly after the order was imposed, social media was in an uproar as the new order went viral and many mistook it for new movement restrictions in the city.
“The Mumbai Police order is an extension of the existing orders and all exemptions under Unlocking that will be applicable in the city of Mumbai until September 30 will continue,” said the Mumbai Police, clearing up the confusion around the order imposed on Thursday.

Maharashtra’s Cabinet Minister Aaditya Thackeray also took to Twitter, urging Mumbaikars not to be alarmed, as it is just an extension of the pre-existing order.
“The order issued under section 144 CrPC is just an extension of the previous order issued on August 31st. @MumbaiPolice has not imposed any new restrictions. Please share and don’t panic, ”he tweeted.
SECTION 144: What does it mean?
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) prohibits the gathering of five or more than five people in one place.
This restriction has been in place in Mumbai since the shutdown began.
