No guarantee that any Covid-19 vaccine in development will work, says WHO chief

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said Tuesday that the health organization has no guarantee whether any vaccine in development for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) will work.

“We have no guarantee that any vaccine in development will work. The more candidates we analyze, the greater the chances that we will have a safe and effective vaccine,” the WHO chief said during a virtual press conference.

He said nearly 200 vaccine candidates are being developed to fight the disease. “Almost 200 vaccines for Covid-19 are currently in clinical and preclinical trials. The history of vaccine development tells us that some will fail and others will succeed, ”added Tedros.

WHO, in coordination with the global vaccine alliance group Gavi and the Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), has created a mechanism to enable the equitable distribution of any Covid vaccine among countries in the future. .

“The Covax facility enables governments to extend their reach in vaccine development and ensure that their population can have early access to effective vaccines. Even more importantly, the installation of Covax is the mechanism that will allow a worldwide coordinated deployment to achieve the greatest possible impact, ”said the head of the health organization.

‘The race for the vaccine is a collaboration, not a contest’

Reminding countries that the race to find a cure for Covid-19 is a collaboration and not a competition, Ghebreyesus said: “Installing Covax will help control the pandemic, save lives and accelerate economic recovery, and ensure that the race for the Covid-19 vaccine is a collaboration, not a contest. “

‘No charity’

As countries advance in their quest to find a vaccine for the coronavirus, the WHO chief urged nations to work together, noting that it is best for each country to find a vaccine for Covid-19.

“This is not charity. It is the best for all countries. We sink or swim together. The quickest route to ending the pandemic and accelerating global economic recovery is to ensure that some people are vaccinated in all countries, not all people in some countries, ”said the chief.
