The IITs had decided to increase fees for new MTech students from an average of Rs 30,000 a year to Rs 2 lakh per year. The IITs had cited that increasing the fee would mean that non-serious candidates would not take this course. This was decided like every year. at least 15 percent of seats at IIT remain vacant as students drop out of college to get a job at UPM. Both IIT and PSU enroll students based on the GATE score.
However, this decision was deferred for discussion at the next council meeting. If the IITs decide to consider the request of the Minister of Human Resources, they will not be able to increase the rate for GATE or any other issue this year as well.
