CUDDALORE: Eight workers suffered burns in a boiler explosion to NLC India Limited thermal power plant (TPS) II in Neyveli in Tamil Nadu Thursday. The cause of the accident could not be immediately determined. However, the company suspects that overheating and high pressure could have caused the boiler outlet unit to explode.
Two of the eight injured are regular workers, while others are contract workers. All the wounded underwent first aid treatment at the NLCIL Hospital and were referred to a private hospital in Trichy for advanced treatment.
The condition of two contact workers who suffered 70% burns is said to be critical.
Five shots of fire ran to the scene. Fire and rescue services personnel struggled for over an hour to quell the fire.
The company has formed an expert committee to investigate the reasons for the explosion. It should be recalled that there was a small fire accident on the conveyor belt in TPS II two days ago.
The TPS II has seven units, with a capacity of 210MW each.
The plant has approximately 2,000 workers, including administration and distribution staff members. A section of the workforce has been under a duty to adhere to social distancing standards during closure.
National Insurance Co, which is the primary insurer for the Neyveli Lignite Corporation, said the public sector entity has taken out a full-risk insurance policy for Rs 35 billion.
The all risk policy covers the mega risk in many eventualities, including fires, explosions, earthquakes and others.
NLC has also taken a liability insurance policy in which the limit of any accident (AOA) is up to Rs 5 million.
National Insurance said the company has adopted a group personal accident policy (GPA). According to the GPA, health insurance of up to Rs 5 lakh is available to employees, currently injured.
