The alliance has 125 of the 243 seats in the Bihar assembly, three above the half mark.

New Delhi:

Nitish Kumar will serve as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the fourth consecutive term, the NDA said today after a meeting of its lawmakers. The NDA, which won the recently concluded elections in Bihar with a very small majority, will now go to the governor to demand the formation of a government, the sources said. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place tomorrow, the sources said.

The alliance has 125 of the 243 seats in the Bihar assembly, three above the half mark.

The ruling alliance MLAs formally appointed Kumar today amid speculation about a change.

The Chief Minister’s Janata Dal United has performed dismally, going from 71 seats it won in 2015 to 43, giving the BJP, which won an unprecedented 74 seats, the advantage in the alliance.

While the BJP had stated before and after the election that Mr. Kumar would remain its top ministerial candidate, a section within the BJP argued that it should not be considered a fact in view of the disastrous performance of the JD (U).

Kumar had revealed some nervousness last week when telling the media that the NDA will take a call to the main candidate for the minister.
