Nitish Kumar launches survey campaign, focusing on Lalu Yadav's family

Nitish Kumar launched the JDU election campaign today with a digital rally.

Patna:

Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has found a key subject for the upcoming state elections: archrival Lalu Yadav’s estranged daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai. Launching his Janata Dal United election campaign today with a digital rally, Nitish Kumar expressed his sympathy for Aishwarya Rai, the estranged wife of Lalu Yadav’s eldest son Tej Pratap Yadav.

“See what kind of treatment they gave to Aishwaya Rai, who is the granddaughter of former Chief Minister Daroga Prasad Rai and daughter of Chandrika Rai, who joined Janata Dal United last month,” the chief minister said.

In an indication that he could present it in the next elections to be held later this year, he said: “We are going to bring it to the public, how they were insulted by the patriarchs of the RJD.”

Tej Pratap Yadav and his wife separated last year, just six months after their marriage.

Initially, Aishwarya Rai had stayed at home to save the marriage. But later, she had complained to the Patna police, accusing her husband and in-laws of domestic violence, after which a First Information Report was filed. Her mother-in-law Rabri Devi, she claimed, had beaten her and evicted her from the home when her divorce case was pending in court.

Aishwarya Rai’s father, Chandrika Rai, resigned from Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, saying he wanted to fight politically.

Chandrika Rai is the son of Daroga Prasad Rai, a congressional veteran who became Bihar’s prime minister in the 1970s. Lalu Yadav’s family had said he was not a great match for the JDU.

Kumar, the five-time chief minister of Bihar, is making another attempt to retain power amid huge criticism from the opposition for his handling of a number of issues. The list includes the coronavirus outbreak, the migration crisis, problems in the agricultural sector and an alleged lack of initiative to investigate the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

For months, he has been at odds with the Lok Janashakti Party of NDA ally Ram Vilas Paswan. The LJP, which was supposed to discuss the possibility of contesting Kumar in these elections while it was part of the NDA, left the decision to Paswan.

For the first time, Kumar also raised the question of Sushant Rajput today. The actor’s death, deemed suicide by the Mumbai police, became the subject of a major political dispute between Bihar and Maharashtra until the Supreme Court confirmed the case filed in Bihar and transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Chief Minister said that he initiated the investigation and turned the case over to the CBI as “the Mumbai Police were doing nothing.” He also expressed confidence that the investigation will do justice to the actor’s memory, who was from Bihar.
