NHRC Notice to MHA on Amnesty Shutdown | India News


NEW DELHI: NHRC has sent a notice to the Union Secretary of the Interior about organizing rights International Amnesty shutting down its operations in the country after denouncing a “witch hunt” by the government, officials said Wednesday.
According to media reports, after the total freezing of their bank accounts in India, the Amnesty International has reportedly stopped all work in the country, the NHRC said in a statement.

“The National Human Rights Commission has learned suo motu of the matter and directs the issuance of the notification to the Minister of the Interior, Ministry of Interior, the government of India, asking for your comments on the allegations made by Amnesty International as mentioned in the news report, “he said.

In a previous statement, the international NGO had stated that it “has been forced to lay off staff in India and halt all its ongoing campaign and investigative work,” the NHRC said.
“It is alleged that this is the latest in the relentless witch hunt of human rights organizations by the Indian government over unsubstantiated and motivated allegations,” the rights panel said.
