THEN: Up to 16 people were killed and 21 others, including a four-year-old boy, were injured after a three-story building collapsed in the Maharashtra city of Bhiwandi on Monday, police said.
The 43-year-old Jhilani building collapsed at 3.40 am, police said, adding that among the seven dead children is one two-year-old.

Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) personnel were seen pulling the boy, Ubed Quraishi, from the rubble and giving him water. Bhiwandi is a motorized loom town about 10 km from Thane.

The building had 40 stories and about 150 people lived in it, an official said.
A civic official told PTI that the building, located in Narpoli’s Patel complex near Dhamankar Naka, collapsed while residents slept.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on site. NDRF DG SN Pradhan said they were using a canine squad to search for people trapped in the rubble.
A portion of the building collapsed and many occupants were trapped in the rubble, an official from the Thane Municipal Corporation said.

The building was not on the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation’s list of dilapidated structures, he said.
A witness said local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the collapse and helped lift some people out of the rubble.

The power supply to the town was cut as a precaution, the official said, adding that the injured have been admitted to local hospitals.
Bhiwandi DCP Rajkumar Shinde said crimes under IPC sections 337,338,304 (2) were being recorded against the building owner Sayyed Ahmed Jilani following a complaint from civic officials after the collapse.
Thane’s Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde said the collapse would be investigated. He visited the site and announced five lakh rupees compensation to the relatives of each victim.
He said 102 “dangerous buildings” in the city of powerloom have already been evacuated.

President Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families over the building collapse incident.
“The loss of life in a building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, is quite distressing. In this hour of pain, my thoughts and prayers are with the accident victims. I wish the speedy recovery of the injured. Local authorities are coordinating rescue and relief efforts, “the president’s tweet read.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed distress at the loss of life in the building collapse.
“Saddened by the building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Condolences to bereaved families. Praying for a speedy recovery for the injured. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected, “Modi tweeted.

Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray expressed his grief at the collapse and instructed the administration to ensure proper rescue and treatment for the injured, his office said.
