West Indies captain Kieron Pollard accused his team of failing to perform by international standards on Sunday after New Zealand comprehensively won the Twenty20’s second international game by 72 runs in a Glenn Phillips record century. New Zealand wrapped up the series at Mount Maunganui with a game to spare, after winning the opener on Friday by five wickets, while Phillips offered a batting masterclass. Called to the Twenty20 side as regular skipper Kane Williamson focuses on the upcoming tests, Phillips plundered eight 6s and 10s on his way to 108 when New Zealand posted a 238-for-three mammoth and then restricted the West Indies to 166 for nine.
“You never know when the next opportunity is going to come and I went into this saying ‘let’s go in as hard as I can. I know I can do it,'” Phillips said.
The 23-year-old, who was born in South Africa but moved to New Zealand at the age of five, took just 46 deliveries to reach his century, the 10th fastest in twenty internationals and one ball faster than New’s previous record. Zeeland. by Colin Munro.
Phillips plays in the Caribbean in New Zealand’s offseason and said being familiar with the West Indies attack was helpful.
“That definitely has a lot to do with my performance here. You go in with more confidence against guys you’ve played well before,” said Phillips, who also caught twice and was left without starter Andre Fletcher on a brilliant full screen.
– ‘It’s our way of thinking’ –
New Zealand substitute captain Tim Southee called Phillips’ performance “incredible,” adding that his two catches, a boundary dive and hard exit showed he “has that X factor.”
But while Phillips, along with Devon Conway, who produced an unbeaten 85, put the game firmly in New Zealand’s hands, opposing captain Pollard was furious.
After winning the toss and sending New Zealand at bat under cloudy skies, Pollard believed the West Indies were in control when the Black Caps reached midfield at 84 for two.
“But between over 10 and 15 we lost him there,” Pollard said.
“In terms of energy, feel and unevenness on the pitch, that’s not the standard that we want to set for ourselves, and it’s not the standard that everyone wants to see in international cricket.
“I think it’s attitude and I think it’s our way of thinking.
Promoted
“If we had stayed in the contest a little longer, we tried to limit the damage to 200, 190 or so, we would have been in favor of the challenge, but we were behind the eight ball after the 10th and it just went off in the form of pear from there. “
Phillips and Conway put in 184 for New Zealand’s third wicket, while the West Indies’ best association was 34 between Pollard (28) and Shimron Hetmyer (25)
