As the six-month military standoff in Ladakh heads into winter and soldiers prepare for a prolonged deployment in freezing conditions, the Army has created temporary accommodation for troops just behind the Royal Line of Control, including tents. heated.
An Army official said Wednesday that “in order to ensure the operational efficiency of the troops deployed in winters, the Army has completed the establishment of habitat facilities for all troops deployed in the sector.”
India has around 50,000 troops in the region to reflect the Chinese deployment. At such an altitude, the weather is an additional challenge for troops to remain ready for combat.
“Aside from the smart camps with built-in facilities that have been built over the years, state-of-the-art habitats have been created with built-in arrangements for electricity, water, heating, health and hygiene facilities,” the official said.
“Troops on the front line are housed in heated tents depending on the tactical considerations of their deployment,” he said, adding that “adequate civilian infrastructure has also been identified.”
Some parts of the region experience about 40 feet of snowfall starting in December. “Along with the wind chill factor, temperatures drop to minus 30-40 degrees Celsius and access to roads is also affected,” the official said.
Another Army source said the habitat can house “the entire force deployed in eastern Ladakh.”
The source said that four commandos of the Indian Army, the North, West, East and Central commandos are authorized to have extreme weather clothing and gear, largely needed for high and very high altitudes (8,000-18,000 feet). and special clothing and mountaineering equipment. which is mainly needed for super high altitudes (over 18,000 feet) Much of this clothing equipment is imported. In September, more than 10,000 extremely cold weather clothing system kits were purchased in the US.
