CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Corporation ordered ITC Grand Chola not to hold banquets, events and meetings after 85 people, including employees and guests, tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 15 days. Civic authorities have recommended saturation testing of all hotel employees, guests and residents. This is the second group reported in the city after IIT-Madras earlier this month.
By Friday, 605 people at the hotel were tested for the viral infection, of whom 85 tested positive, said joint commissioner of the corporation (health) Divyadharshini S. “All patients who tested positive were isolated. They were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms. ” she said. Although some of them have been discharged, the health of others is stable.
ITC Grand Chola in a statement to TOI said: “The health and safety of our guests and associates is of the utmost importance. The property is following the necessary SOPs established by the authorities, along with its own proven and strict hygiene and sanitation protocol – from social distancing in public areas to strict kitchen hygiene and periodic controls by associates. The authorities have received all the necessary information. Each member of the team is trained and sensitized to follow all the prescribed preventions of the Covid-19 protocol people who work from home and do not come to the workplace. They have not had contact with the hotel workforce or with our guests. ”
In addition to employees, including hotel kitchen staff, inmates from Aditya Residencies, Sundra Residencies and Spark Apartments, all serviced apartment complexes, tested positive for the viral infection, civic officials said.
The hotel reported its first case on December 15. On Friday, there were 13 more cases.
Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said he visited the areas where the employees resided. “We organized a fever camp and advised them to visit the government testing center if they or their relatives had symptoms,” he said.
He also advised all hotel management to ensure they follow disinfection protocols. “Fever clinics and RTPCR testing and disease containment are just a reactive approach. We have to ensure sanitation, masks, and social distancing at all times. It’s the only sustainable way to move forward until vaccines actually get. approval and supplies begin, “he said. Hotels, he said, do not restrict the number of people when they host events such as weddings or birthday parties. “We will not hesitate to issue notices or initiate legal action if administrations do not guarantee compliance,” he said.
