Rekha Sharma, president of the National Commission for Women, was attacked on social media after she met with the Governor of Maharashtra, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, and discussed cases of “increased love of jihad” with him.
“Our President, Rekha Sharma, met with Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, His Excellency, Governor of Maharashtra, and discussed issues related to the safety of women in the state, including the missing One Stop Centers, sexual abuse and rape of female patients at Covid-19 centers and increased love jihad cases, “the NCW said in a statement.
They also tweeted the same thing from NCW’s official Twitter account.
The meeting of the head of NCW and the mention of the term ‘love jihad’ sparked outrage on social media. ‘Love Jihad’ is a conspiracy theory used to define Muslim men who cajole Hindu women into marrying with the intention of converting them to Islam.
The term ‘love jihad’ became the center of heated debate once more recently after a commercial for jewelry brand Tanishq featured an interfaith couple. It shows a Hindu woman married to a Muslim family as they prepare for their baby shower according to Hindu rituals. The ad sparked a backlash and Tanishq was forced to withdraw it after his employees faced threats.
However, after her meeting with Koshyari, netizens dug up Sharma’s old tweets. The comments are in bad taste against political leaders and their families. Netizens called his comments ‘outrageous’ and demanded his resignation from the position.
