Bhopal:
An FIR was filed today in Madhya Pradesh against two executives from the Netflix streaming platform for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through their web series “A Suitable Boy” that featured kissing scenes allegedly on a temple campus, an official said.
The FIR appointed Monika Shergill, Vice President of Content (Netflix) and Ambika Khurana, Director of Public Policy (Netflix), Madhya Pradesh Interior Minister Narottam Mishra said.
They were charged by Rewa police in a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) National Secretary Gaurav Tiwari, who demanded an apology from Netflix and the series creators, and the removal of “objectionable scenes”, which, according to he, too, “encouraged loving jihad.”
“He had asked officials to examine the ‘A Right Boy’ series that airs on Netflix to see if the kissing scenes were filmed in a temple and if they hurt religious feelings. The prima facie examination found that these scenes are hurtful the feelings of a particular religion, “Mishra said in a video statement.
“Based on a complaint filed by Gaurav Tiwari, an FIR is being registered under section 295 (A) (malicious acts to outrage and insult religious feelings and beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in Rewa against Netflix officials – Monika Shergill and Ambika Khurana, “he added.
Rewa Police Superintendent Rakesh Kumar Singh told reporters that the FIR has been searched and that further investigations are underway.
On Saturday, Gaurav Tiwari had submitted a memorandum to the Rewa Police Superintendent demanding an apology from Netflix and the series’ creators, and the removal of “objectionable scenes” from “A Right Boy.”
“The kissing scenes (filmed) inside a temple of Lord Maheshwar (a historical city located on the banks of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh) have hurt the feelings of Hindus. This is also encouraging of the ‘loving jihad'”, had declared Tiwari.
He had named Monika Shergill and Ambika Khurana in his complaint request.
The six-part Netflix series has been directed by renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, known for her critically acclaimed films such as “Salaam Bombay”, “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Namesake.”
