Nearly 89,000 cases bring India’s Covid-19 count closer to the 6 million mark and death toll to 94,503


India recorded 88,600 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the past 24 hours, bringing the national count closer to six million.

According to the Union Ministry of Health on Sunday, the number of active cases in the country amounts to 9.56,402, while 49,41,627 patients have been cured / discharged from hospitals.

The disease claimed 1,124 lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s death count to 94,503.

The Health Ministry had said on Saturday that 75 percent of Covid-19 cases are concentrated in 10 states and territories of the union.

The 10 states and UT are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Delhi, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh.

The ministry also said that India has conducted a total of seven million tests for the detection of coronavirus infection as of Friday and that the country’s testing capacity has surpassed 14 million tests daily.

Stating that India has substantially increased its testing infrastructure, he said that to date, there are 1,823 labs, including 1,086 government and 737 private.

“The national cumulative positivity rate is 8.40 percent and tests per million currently stand at 50,920,” the ministry said.

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Saturday that the country’s 110 PPE manufacturers are producing more than 5 lakhs of personal protective equipment a day.

“We now have 110 PPE manufacturers in India, producing more than 5 lakh per day. States that used to complain about not getting an adequate amount of PPE now say they don’t have a place to store it when we talk about shipping PPE, ”said Harsh Vardhan here on the 79th Foundation Day of the Scientific and Industrial Research Council ( CSIR).

The minister also said that India’s recovery rate is around 82 percent and the death rate is around 1.6 percent.
