The Centre on Tuesday declared Navi Mumbai, Rajkot, Surat, Mysore, Indore and Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh) as ‘5-star trash-free cities’.
Karnal, New Delhi, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Chandigarh, Bhilai Nagar, Ahmedabad are among the ” three stars of trash free rating, while new Delhi Cantonment, Vadodara, Rohtak, are among the one-star garbage free cities.
In general, the 65 cities have been given three stars and 70 cities have a one-star rating among the total of 1435 cities that apply.
The announcement of the results, the minister for housing and urban affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri said that the coronavirus of the crisis has brought forward the importance of disinfection, together with the management of solid waste. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the current situation could have been much worse, had it not been for the critical part that Swachh Bharat Mission, Urban has played in the past five years to ensure a high degree of cleanliness and sanitation in urban areas, the minister added.
The star rating protocol was launched by the central government in January of 2018, in order to institutionalize a mechanism for cities to achieve the free status of garbage that leads to a higher degree of cleanliness. The protocol includes components such as the cleaning of sewers & bodies of water, of plastic, waste management, management of construction and demolition waste which are critical factors for the achievement of garbage free cities. While the key thrust of this protocol is on the management of solid waste, it also takes care of ensuring certain minimum standards of sanitation, through a set of requirements defined in the framework.
The central ministry comes out with a yearly cleaning of the survey – Swachh Survekshan for urban areas of India. This protocol was devised where each neighborhood, in each city must reach a certain level through 24 different components of the solid waste management (SWM) and is classified based on overall ratings received.
“Our goal is to institutionalize as well as bring consistency and transparency when it comes to SWM. This certification is not only a recognition of the state of cleanliness of Urban Local Bodies and strengthened SWM systems, but also a brand of trust and reliability similar to the universally known rules. On the other hand, the performance of cities under the Star Rating Protocol is crucial because it carries important weightage when it comes to their final evaluation in Swachh Survekshan,” Puri said.
