National Taiwan Day posters removed near Chinese Embassy in Delhi

New Delhi: Posters wishing Taiwan on its national day on Saturday appeared near the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, but were removed by the New Delhi Municipal Council within hours, an official said.

The posters, with the words “Happy National Taiwan Day Oct 10”, were posted by Delhi BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, who also tweeted his photos.

The posters were posted Friday night on the sidewalk of Shanti Path near the Chinese embassy in the diplomatic enclave of the capital Chankyapuri.

“We have removed the posters that were posted near the Chinese embassy,” an NDMC official said on Saturday.

Earlier, the Chinese embassy here had issued guidelines to the Indian media not to violate New Delhi’s “One China” policy during Taiwan National Day.

“All countries that have diplomatic relations with China must firmly honor their commitment to the one-China policy, which is also the long-standing official position of the Indian government,” the October 7 letter read.

“We hope that the Indian media can stick to the Indian government’s position on the Taiwan issue and not violate the one-China principle,” he said.

The letter was issued in the wake of announcements published by the Taiwanese government in a couple of major Indian newspapers ahead of National Taiwan Day on October 10.

India on Thursday took indirect shots at the guidelines, saying there are “free media” in this country.
