New Delhi: India celebrates National Farmer’s Day or Kisan Diwas on December 23 of each year. The day is celebrated in memory of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was in office for a short time. He assumed the post of Prime Minister of India from July 1979 to January 1980. Chaudhary Charan Singh is well known for introducing welfare schemes for farmers. He always supported farmers and formulated pro-farmer policies.

Chaudhary Charan Singh was born into a peasant family in Noorpur, Meerut in 1902. He recognized and commended the importance of the agricultural economy and the position of a farmer in the economy.

Chaudhary Charan Singh emerged as a distinct leader when he opposed then-Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. In the 1959 Nagpur Congress session, Chaudhary Charan Singh publicly opposed Nehru for his collectivist and socialist land policies.

Chaudhary Charan Singh always believed in simplicity and lived a simpler life. He is the author of several books on the problems of Indian farmers and has also suggested solutions for them.

The Indian government has recognized his contribution and honored him several times.

The monument to Chaudhary Charan Singh is known as Kisan Ghat. His birth anniversary is observed as National Farmer’s Day. The Amausi Airport in Lucknow is renamed Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. The University of Meerut is renamed Chaudhary Charan Singh University.
