NASA Announces Coding Content for School Children to “Help” the ISS – Latest News

Texas Instruments and NASA have teamed up to announce a spatial coding contest for school-age children. The NASA and TI code contest challenges middle and high school students to improve a process or product on the International Space Station (ISS). The processes could be finding a better way to help astronauts stay in shape or a more efficient process for communicating with Mission Control.

“As NASA celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the continued human presence aboard the International Space Station and prepares to send astronauts to the Moon and Mars, we remain focused on the future. The Artemis Generation is that future and creates opportunities that foster teamwork, collaboration and problem solving will put you on the path to becoming the next generation of explorers, “said Mike Kincaid, Associate Administrator, NASA Office of STEM Engagement.

The NASA and IT code contest is easy to enter and encourages teams of up to five students to work together virtually to submit a written proposal that describes the existing process or product they want to improve on board the orbiting lab.

A panel of IT and NASA judges will determine which teams will go ahead. As teams move forward, they should start coding and building their proposed design and displaying it on video. The public will vote on their favorite video, and up to five teams will have the opportunity to visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston this fall, if travel conditions improve, for a behind-the-scenes tour and present their designs in person.

Each member of the winning team will receive a TI graphing calculator and TI’s calculator-controlled robotic vehicle, the TI-Innovator Rover. The teacher or adult who sponsors the winning team also wins a $ 250 gift card to help cover the cost of future class activities. All students who accept the mission will automatically enter to earn IT technology and NASA-themed items at the end of the contest, according to a statement.
