Nail Polish is an intriguing legal crime thriller that manages to keep its twists and turns with minimal twists. Popular and beloved sports coach Veer Singh (Kaul) is charged with the heinous rape and murder of two children. But what appears to be an open and closed case, according to the evidence, turns into a murky history of past trauma, divided personalities, and questionable redemption.
The well-to-do and famous lawyer Sid Jaisingh (Rampal) emerges from an unexpected source. The ‘Sarkaari vakeel’ Amit Kumar (Tiwari) continues to throw witness after witness, which the defense is busy eliminating. Judge Bhusan (Kapur) presides, keeping an open mind. Meanwhile, a violent episode pushes Veer Singh to the brink, and the twist makes us question how we perceive sanity and ‘insanity’, and wonder if Veer is innocent or a ruthless killer.
The fast-paced plot is full of interesting little touches, and the characters are shown in their professional and personal attire. Jaisingh likes to wear black satin at home and doesn’t seem to care about the women around him. Tiwari has a cozy home life, but needs the help of an inhaler to catch her breath. Bhushan has a wife (Madhoo) who divides her affection between him and alcohol. And Veer’s dark past, quickly crumbling, seems to have a beautiful woman in him.
Some things are exaggerated (a predictable close-up with a character grinning knowingly), a couple of facts are presented confusingly, but despite the occasional movement of the eyes, nail polish, animated by a wonderful performance from Kaul and cleverly supported by resting, staying engaged. Great to see Madhoo in the movies again. That is an advantage.
