For Harshvardhan Agarwal of Haryana, who obtained the rank of All India (AIR) 6 in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) main, the target is JEE Advanced as he wants to join his older brother Mannan at IIT-Bombay. Mannan was ranked 14th on JEE Advanced last year and was in the top 200 on JEE Main. While Harshvardhan has ranked higher than his brother on Main, he is now targeting the top 10 in Advanced, he told indianexpress.com in a phone interview.
The 18-year-old had also appeared for JEE in the January session when he scored a 99,989 percentile that he said was not enough. “A 99.989 percentile had only given me a 100+ rank and I was not satisfied with that. So, I wanted to run for Main again, but the constant postponement had me worried about whether or not I could join college this year, ”he said.

“Although I followed a strict routine for the first two months, in the future, I got bored because only a limited amount can be practiced. During the confinement, I started playing chess and have developed some skills in the game, ”he said.
He had won a silver medal at the Internal Physical Olympiad last year. The Haryana boy had also represented India at the Asian Physics Olympiad last year, where he earned an honorable mention. While these Olympics didn’t prepare him for the entrance test, Aggarwal said, they did help him meet like-minded people and increased his exposure.
For JEE Main, Agarwal said that he began his preparation from class 9 onward when he focused on reading the NCERTs for class 11 in physics and math. Physics was his favorite subject. For Main, however, he said that he had practiced alone for the past two weeks, with most of the time spent preparing for Advanced.
He joined FIITJEE training classes in the 10th standard and said he practiced online lessons and teasing during the pandemic, which helped keep him going. Now his goal is to join IIT-Bombay and enjoy university life, he said. Aggarwal’s father works at BSNL while his mother is a business teacher. She obtained a 95.2 percent score on her tables.
With him Divyanshu Aggarwal from Hisar from Harayana also scored 100 percentage points. However, she chose not to participate in the September exam and has been practicing for JEE Advanced ever since. Divanshu, who comes from a family of doctors, told indianexpress.com: “I love solving math problems, but my parents initially wanted me to study medicine. However, seeing my inclination towards the subject, they supported me ”. Divyanshu will be the first engineer in his family. Divyanshu has an AIR 3.
