MEERUT / BIJNOR: A Muslim teenager has been incarcerated in Bijnor jail for 10 days after walking Hindu girl at home in a town in Bijnor one night after attending a friend’s birthday party. It appears to have started with an accusation of “theft” that, at some point, turned into one of “love jihad.”

“Four members of his family, including his father, signed a supurdginama (custody deed). They gave a written statement to the police that they would not press charges, ”said gram pradhan Vinod Saini, who was present at the police station. “An hour later, the family was summoned again. This time, the police took a written complaint from the girl’s father. ”
The complaint said: “The boy had told my daughter that he was a Hindu and that he would speak to her secretly… (That day), he was running away with her to marry her and convert her… When my daughter found out (her name) , he ran away, came home and told us everything ”. An FIR was filed on the afternoon of that day on the basis of the complaint.
When the girl was asked if this was what happened, she said, “He was not trying to convert me.”
The two of them had been together in elementary school. Although he later retired, she continued with her studies. She is in Class XI now. And although the boy’s family said he is 17, the police said he was 18 and the FIR was presented.
“The accused was registered under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 366 (kidnapping to compel marriage) of the CPI, Section 18 of the POCSO Law (sexual harassment), Section 3 (2) (v) of the SC / ST Act (offense that carries a penalty of 10 years in jail against a member of the SC or ST community) and Section 3 (conversion for fraud, misrepresentation, coercion, seduction or marriage) and 5 (1) (punishment for forced conversion) of the UP Prohibition of Illegal conversion of religion ordinance”Said Bijnor SP Dharam Veer Singh. “Based on the girl’s statement under Section 164 of the CrPC (recording of statement before a magistrate) and other corroborative evidence, the defendant was arrested and sent to jail.”
On Friday night, 10 days after the attack, the police learned of the video and registered an FIR at the Nahtaur police station. “(The Muslim teenager) was approached by a mob who thought he was a thief and beat him,” a police statement said. Unidentified persons have been registered under sections 147 (riots), 323 (willfully causing harm), 504 (willful insult to provoke) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. So far two people have been arrested.
