#MungerDanga: What happened in the city of Bihar?
According to Durga idol dipping committee member Prakash Bhagat, out of more than 53 Durga idols installed in Munger, revelers brought 15 idols to dive into the Ganges at Deendayal Chowk.
Idols usually immerse themselves in bodies of water after three days of Vijayadashami. However, in the wake of the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections on October 28, the administration asked people to submerge the idols before 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
Heeding the order of the administration, the organizers of the Durga puja reportedly held a procession around midnight. Music was being played at full volume as people headed for the dive.
Around 11:50 a.m., police officers allegedly beat four people who were reportedly carrying idols. This caused a scandal among people seeking action against the police. Before, the crowd resorted to stoning. To control the situation, the police resorted to lathi-charge. However, since the situation could not be alleviated with lathi-charge, the police resorted to firing tear gas canisters.
The situation could finally be under control by 1 am. According to the Munger SP, the police found three firearms, live cartridges and empty bullets from the place where the clashes occurred.
Meanwhile, a huge security force was stationed in Munger on Tuesday.
