Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would establish at least 48 distribution centers in Mumbai to administer the Covid-19 vaccine to the city’s population over 1.24 crore once it is available.
There will be two to three vaccination centers in each of the city’s 24 administrative districts, according to civic officials involved in the process.
BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said: “Once the vaccination begins, we will begin distribution in all corners of the city simultaneously.”
Kakani added: “We will use the network of our municipal dispensaries, civic hospitals and civic schools where the vaccine distribution centers will be established. All the rooms have already identified those places. In addition, the distribution will be done in a closed environment, considering that the doses of the vaccine will require maintaining a certain temperature for which cold storage will be required while the vaccination process is carried out ”.
The final distribution plan will be decided after the Center establishes the guidelines for it. The number of distribution centers will also increase once private institutions also have permission to distribute vaccines, BMC officials said.
Initially, the vaccine will be administered to 125,000 identified frontline workers, followed by older people and people with comorbidities.
