MUMBAI: The minimum temperature in the city dropped to 16 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, the lowest this season. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast that minimum temperatures will remain between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius for the next two days.

While the minimum temperature of Santacruz was 2 degrees Celsius below normal and yesterday’s temperature, Colaba registered a minimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, only 0.4 degrees Celsius below normal. Before Tuesday, the lowest low temperature this season was 17.4 degrees Celsius on December 7. The lowest minimum temperature in December 2019 was 16.4 degrees Celsius and 14.4 degrees Celsius the year before.
KS Hosalikar, Deputy Managing Director Western Region, IMD said: “It is a mercury free fall in Mumbai as expected. Although it is sunny, there is a cool breeze with chills. We can enjoy the long awaited short winter in the city. Winter is showing in various other parts of the state as well with low temperatures dropping in the single digits. ”
Mahesh Palawat, vice president of meteorology and climate change at the private weather forecasting agency, Skymet said: “Temperatures in the city will increase marginally by December 25.”
Meanwhile, as temperatures dropped, air pollution in the city increased on Tuesday. Mumbai posted an overall air quality index of 183, according to the System of Air Quality Weather Research and Forecasting (SAFAR), up from 156 on Monday. An AQI between 101 and 200 is considered moderate and does not pose a health risk to the general public.
