Mumbai: six-story building toppled like a deck of cards | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished a part of the civic authority Siddharth General Hospital Building in Goregaon West on Wednesday without using explosives. The remaining part of the structure will be demolished in two phases in two weeks, after which a new hospital building will be constructed.

The civic body will build a new hospital with a capacity of 300 beds on the site at a cost of around Rs 300 crore which will be beneficial for the people living between the western stretch of Jogeshwari and Malad.

The BMC has launched the 172-bed hospital in Siddharth Nagar in Goregaon (West) in 1998, but closed it last year because the hospital building was in shambles. They decided to tear down the structure to build a new hospital building.
The total area of the hospital parcel is 2.1 acres and BMC will obtain a building permit of up to 33,588 square meters, which will help construct an 11-story building on the parcel. It will be the multi-specialty hospital and the number or bed may be increased during the planning stage, civic officials said.
The civic body designated contractor removed all live load from the existing building, such as windows and doors. Subsequently, they demolished all the pillars on which one of the three wings of the building stood, excluding two to balance the structure.
On Wednesday, with the help of the long arm of a poclain machine, BMC drilled the two pillars one after the other. Within minutes, the building collapses like a deck of cards without disturbing the movement of traffic on the adjoining road.
The BMC will clear the debris before demolishing the two remaining wings of the building with a similar technique.
