Madan Sharma, 65, lives with her family at the Thakur Complex in Kandivali East. On Wednesday, he had received an image forwarded on a WhatsApp group. The image was a cartoon about the CM. Sharma forwarded the image on another WhatsApp group made up of members of his housing society.
On Friday, his phone started ringing at 10:30 a.m. M. The caller asked her name and where she lived. Sharma provided the details. Later, Sharma received a call from another number. The caller introduced himself as Kamlesh Kadam and asked about the image Sharma had shared two days earlier. Sharma clarified that it was a forwarded image that he had received from some other WhatsApp group. Around noon, Sharma received an intercom call and the caller asked him to come to the society gate.
“A group of 8 to 10 men was waiting outside the door. As soon as I got to the door, kicks and punches started raining down on me,” Sharma said. CCTV footage shows Sharma running back to the building and men dragging him. Sharma suffered eye injuries. “Later, the police came to my house wanting to arrest me, when I was the victim. My family members contacted the local BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar. He helped us file a complaint and took me to hospital,” Sharma said. He added that he did not personally know any of the attackers. “One of the men was named Sanjay Manjrekar,” Sharma said.
Samta Nagar police said they would examine the CCTV footage, verify the identity of the attackers, and then make arrests.
