Bombay:
Mumbai today reported more than 9,000 daily cases of coronavirus, which is the highest peak in a single day for the capital of Maharashtra. It also recorded 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.
According to the Mumbai municipal body, Brihanmumbai Corporation or BMC, 9,090 people tested positive for the virus in 24 hours. 5,322 were discharged, bringing the total recovery count to 3.66,365. The recovery rate has been reduced to 83 percent.
The city currently has 62,187 active cases.
The doubling rate is 44 days and the growth rate is 1.54%. Among the dead, 21 patients had comorbidities. One person who died was under 40, 19 were over 60, while seven were between 40 and 60, the state government said in a statement.
The city had reported 8,832 cases yesterday.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra, which is the worst affected state in the country, has reported 49,447 coronavirus cases and 277 deaths in one day. This is the highest daily figure in Maharashtra.
The state had reported 47,827 cases and 202 deaths yesterday. Meanwhile, Pune reported a record 10,873 cases and 52 deaths.
With 1.84,404 new tests, the total number of samples analyzed so far in Maharashtra increased to 2,03,43,123, the department said. The case recovery rate in the state is now 84.49 percent, while the death rate is 1.88 percent, he said.
Of the 277 deaths, 132 deaths occurred in the past 48 hours, according to the statement. A total of 37,821 patients were discharged during the day, bringing the recovery count in Maharashtra so far to 24,95,315, he said. The state now has 4,01,172 active cases.
India, which is facing a second wave of infections, registered 89,129 new cases of coronavirus today. Today’s increase was the highest since September 20, when 92,605 cases were reported.
Maharashtra has contributed around 60 percent of the country’s total daily cases in recent weeks.
Eight of the ten districts with the highest number of coronavirus cases are in Maharashtra.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Friday that the possibility of a shutdown in Maharashtra cannot be ruled out if the rise in coronavirus cases continues.
“I can’t rule out imposing a lockdown if the current COVID-19 situation prevails. People have become complacent. We are in a Catch 22 situation, should we look at the economy or health?” the Chief Minister said in a televised speech.
