Bombay:

The daily increase of coronavirus in Mumbai has exceeded 3,500, 8% more than the number reported yesterday. The number of recoveries in the same period is 1,203. Eight people have died. The Mumbai civic body has already banned holi this year in light of the increase, which has been identified as the second emerging peak.

The number of new cases reported in the last 24 hours is 3,512, state government data showed.

Across Maharashtra, 26,699 cases were recorded during the past 24 hours. There has been a sharp increase in the number of deaths. From 58 yesterday, the number shot up to 132, a 127 percent increase from yesterday. However, the figure includes deaths that were not reported for more than a week.

74 deaths occurred in the last 48 hours and 23 in the last week. The remaining 35 deaths correspond to the period before last week.

Brihanmumbai Corporation, the city’s civic body, has said that this year Holi will not be allowed to be played in public or in private due to the rise in Covid. All celebrations linked to Holi on March 28 and 29 will be canceled to curb the spread of the virus in the city.

Maharashtra has had the worst performance among more than seven states that have been affected by an increase in Covid, which is suspected to have been caused by several mutant strains of the virus.

As of today, the total number of infections with variants from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa in the country was 795, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.

Earlier today, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh recently said that 81 percent of the more than 400 Covid samples analyzed were the UK variant.

The new peak comes when the government allowed vaccination for everyone over 45 years of age as of April 1.

Until now, vaccination was allowed only for healthcare professionals, frontline workers, those over 50 and those over 45 with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases.
