A 20-year-old man jumped to death from his sixth-floor apartment in Mulund after allegedly stabbing his father and grandfather on Saturday.
The incident took place at the Vasant Oscar Housing Society. Police said Shardul Mangle killed his father Milind, 55, a motivational speaker, and grandfather Suresh, 85, bedridden with a knife.
A neighbor, who witnessed part of the double murder, but did not want to be identified, said: “Around 8.45 am, I was sleeping when suddenly I heard someone knock on my door. When I opened the door, I saw Milind with her throat slit and blood all over her body. When he was about to open the security door, Shardul ran out of his house with a knife in his hand. “
Police said the neighbor witnessed Shardul stabbing Milind several times in the back. He closed the door to ensure the safety of his family, including a baby, his wife and his parents.
Police said that after attacking Milind, Shardul returned to his apartment and slit his grandfather’s throat. After this, he jumped to his death. By then, the neighbor had informed other residents of the building of the incident.
“By the time we got there, Shardul had jumped out of his sixth floor house and was lying on the ground near the parking lot. It seemed to be still alive. We informed the Police Control Room and called an ambulance, ”said another resident.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone VII) Prashant Kadam said: “We learned of the incident around 9.30 am. Our team went to the scene and rushed Shardul and Suresh to the hospital. Grandpa was barely alive. They were both declared dead during treatment ”.
A caretaker, Anand Kamble, was present at the home at the time of the incident.
Fearing for his life, he locked himself in the bathroom, police said.
In his statement to the police, he said: “I had just delivered coffee to Milind and was working in the kitchen, when I heard Milind screaming. I saw that Shardul had attacked him with a knife. I ran to the bathroom and locked myself in. I had asked Grandpa to come with me, but he refused. “
Milind had separated from his wife Priya eight years ago. He stays with his daughter Riya in Ghatkopar.
“Shardul used to stay with his mother’s parents, but because he was bothering them, Milind got him to stay at home,” said one resident.
The neighbor who witnessed the murder said that Milind had once told him that Shardul had been affected by his parents’ separation.
“We have learned that Shardul suffered from schizophrenia. He got aggressive over little things. Differences had arisen between Milind and Shardul since the last month and a half and they argued often, ”Kadam said.
Police said they seized two knives at the scene. “The first knife with which Shardul attacked Milind broke. Then he took another knife from the kitchen and stabbed his father and grandfather, ”Kadam said. Police said Shardul had even washed the second knife.
Mulund police said they have registered a murder case against Shardul.
