MUMBAI: A 27-year-old man and his 22-year-old friend were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head in Malad West late Monday.
Prima facie, the reason seemed to be a bitter relationship between the couple.
Police suspect that the man shot the woman before shooting himself.
Joint Commissioner, Law and Order, Vishwas Nangre Patil rushed to the scene after learning of the incident, in addition to other senior officials.
Police suspect the man had a criminal record. He probably brought with him the revolver made in the country, used in the crime.
The couple had met on the Inorbit back road, which is off New Link Road in Malad.
They had met after a long time and had ordered food at a stall. They sat on a street corner where couples usually pass.
Police sources said the two had an argument.
“The woman was engaged to someone else a few days ago. This is believed to have angered the man,” said a police officer.
At around 9.30pm, residents heard gunshots and marked the police control room.
The bodies of the couple were covered in blood when a group of police vehicles arrived.
The couple was pronounced dead in a public hospital. Crime branch units rushed to the crime scene upon learning of the shooting to verify if there was any connection to the mob.
Bangur Nagar police recorded two cases of accidental death in connection with the incident.
Police said the man lived in Laljipada in Kandivali (west) and was not employed.
Police are investigating whether it was a pre-planned murder when the weapon was brought in.
