Mumbai Locals: More Trains Starting Sept 21, Private Bank Employees Also Allowed

The Railways have decided to allow 10% of the selected employees of cooperative and private banks to travel on Mumbai suburban trains. Employees of nationalized banks can now travel by train. Essential staff, including nationalized bank employees and lawyers, could travel on local trains until now, as suburban railways resumed operations in mid-June.

At the request of the Maharashtra government, 10 percent of the total staff of cooperative and private banks will be allowed to travel on local trains, according to a joint statement issued by the Central and Western Railways.

10 percent of selected staff will be required to obtain QR ID codes from the state government. Until then, those with valid ID cards can buy tickets and travel.

Rail authorities allowed aircraft maintenance and repair personnel to travel on local trains.

The railroads also said additional reservation counters will be opened at major stations, and urged passengers to continue social distancing.

From September 21, 500 local trains instead of 350 will be running in Mumbai.

“The number of daily special suburban services will increase from 350 to 500 on Western Railway beginning September 21 to maintain social distancing and avoid overcrowding. Essential personnel notified by the state government to travel on local trains are asked to follow social distancing and wear a mask while traveling, ”Western Railway said in a statement.
