A day after the Center allowed Indian Railways to “gradually” resume passenger train services, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to start local trains in Mumbai for those working in essential services. Mumbai suburban rail services, the lifeline of the Maximum City, have been stopped since March 22 to mitigate the spread of the virus in the country.
Local trains should work for those people who are allowed to go to work in the Mumbai region, the Prime Minister of Maharashtra told Prime Minister Modi during a video conference with Prime Minister Modi. Passengers will be able to board the trains if they show their ID cards, Thackeray added.
Thackeray also urged PM Modi to show “specific and concrete direction” on the ongoing blockade. “Show us a specific and concrete direction on the closure, the states will implement the same,” he said.
Maharashtra recorded more than 1,000 cases for the sixth consecutive day, bringing the state’s COVID-19 count to 23,401, according to the ministry of health and family welfare. Two months after the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in Mumbai, the COVID-19 count in the financial capital of India was 14,355 on Monday. More than 700 people tested positive for the new coronavirus in Mumbai in the past 24 hours.
Dharavi’s slums alone continued to be a hot spot in Mumbai, registering 57 new cases, bringing the total number of patients to 916 and 29 deaths so far.
Maharashtra also recorded the highest number of deaths in India. Up to 868 people died in the state. Mumbai only accounted for 528 COVID-19 related deaths.
“We need help from the central forces so that our police personnel can get some rest. The personnel are currently exhausted. We cannot let them get sick,” Thackeray said.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (Thane Division) reported 566 COVID-19 deaths and 17,661 patients. The Pune Division confirmed 176 deaths and 3,206 patients with coronavirus. The Nashik division recorded 64 COVID-19 deaths and 1,015 positive cases, followed by Aurangabad with 15 deaths and 660 patients, the Akola division with 25 deaths and 368 coronavirus patients, the Kolhapur division with 4 deaths and 104 patients, the Latur division with 5 deaths and 80 cases and, finally, the Nagpur division with 3 deaths and 266 patients.
Thackeray said that Maharashtra suffered a ₹Rs 35 billion in GST revenue due to the blockade. “The state should get its refund as soon as possible,” he asked Prime Minister Modi.
